Steven Weiniger It’s always a good time to really look at your posture, and check in with how you’re treating the only body you have. Especially with texting and sitting behind a computer at work, followed by sitting in front of a television at home, bad habits are causing an epidemic of folded over posture. Plus, as we get older, gravity bends us more, aggravating the issue.
Steven Weiniger People who move unevenly suffer more back pain, plus they look older than their age. Asymmetry will reveal itself when the left and right side of your body looks lopsided on a posture assessment picture, which also means you’re body is not moving the same on both sides. This is a problem because once your muscles are trained to move differently on the left versus the right, they keep moving that way, locking in the adapted movement pattern.
Steven Weiniger How’s your driving posture? As people become more posture aware, many notice their posture is more bent forward on the drive home than it was during the morning drive to work. Most likely the culprit is fatigue and/or sitting in front of a computer all day.
Steven Weiniger Your posture environment is the physical space in which you put your body. Just as overall posture is HOW you balance, your posture environment is WHERE and HOW each PostureZone is balancing in the unique situations of life.
Steven Weiniger According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, lifting heavy objects is a leading cause of injuries in the workplace. Over 36 percent of injuries involving missed workdays in 2001 were the result of shoulder and back injuries. Overexertion and cumulative trauma were the biggest factors in these injuries.
Steven Weiniger Work is what most people do, most of the time. And, most people sit at work. Sitting slumped over a computer won’t give you a hunchback in a day, but over time the body molds and folds, restricting breathing and circulation to impact health nearly as much as smoking.
Steven Weiniger Everyone knows sleep is important, but until recently no one knew exactly why.
Now research shows that waste products from the brain’s metabolism accumulates in the fluid surrounding nerves during the day, and then gets flushed out and eliminated when you sleep. The fluid is called cerebro-spina fluid (CSF), and the study found poor sleep was associated with a buildup of a substance (b-amyloid) in CSF associated with Alzheimers. Steven Weiniger Mindful posture, standing your tallest, is important because it’s the beginning of moving tall. Balanced posture means muscles exercise more symmetrically, minimizing joint stress and helping you breathe your fullest. Retraining strong alignment and awareness in posture and motion can begin with being aware when you walk.
Steven Weiniger Nowadays many people sit an average of 13 hours a day. Sitting folded in front of a computer or desk reduces your body awareness. Meanwhile, just like clay, over time muscles, ligaments and other soft tissue are molding your body, and folding you into weak posture.
Steven Weiniger A recent study showed that when people sitting at work know their posture is being monitored with a camera, they sit straighter during their day.
